still behind bars. casey anthony is sentenced for lying to investigators. >> i will sentence you to one year in the orange county jail. >> but how much more time will casey anthony really serve? >> hi, everybody. i'm mary bubala. >> i'm kai jackson. here's what people are talking about. >> more jail time for casey anthony. but she could be free in less than a week. anthony was sentenced today for lying to police. manuel gallegus reports from florida. >> reporter: it's the news casey anthony was waiting for. >> the defendant was given credit for 1,043 days. >> reporter: after factoring in

her time already served and good behavior, anthony will walk free next wednesday. judge anthony belvin sentenced her to the maximum of one year in prison for each count of lying to the authorities. he said those lies were costly to the state. >> as a result of those four distinct and separate lies, law enforcement exforcement spent a great deal of time. >> reporter: anthony had her hair down for the first time and wearing makeup. >> i really thought that she thought she was going to walk free. >> reporter: but anthony's demeanor changed as the judge sentenced her. >> outside the courthouse, dozens of protestors gathered for the sentencing. they're angered at the not- guilty verdict and at anthony. >> it's not enough. >> she killed her own baby. >> reporter: the florida mother

did have some support. >> her peers found her not guilty. so she's not guilty. >> reporter: many expect movie offers to pile up. that's making people who feel justice was not served upset. anthony's long ordeal will soon be over, but she'll enter a world where she's not welcomed by many. in orlando, florida, manuel gallegus, wjz eyewitness news. >> a local lawmaker is using the anthony case to make penalties tougher on parents who don't report missing children. mourning the loss of a legendary baltimore colt. john mackey loses his battle with dementia. denise has more on his legacy. >> reporter: i had the pleasure of meeting john and sylvia mackey a few years back. and we talked about his condition and how the hard hits he took on the football field

could have been to blame. mackey played tight end from 1963 to 1971 and was a big part of their 1971 super bowl win. off the field, mackey was the first president of the nfl players association. wjz spoke with sylvia mackey earlier today, about the loss of her husband. >> i'm doing well, thank you. because -- it's not like all of a sudden, he was killed or something was unexpected. i understood the disease. i knew the direction that it was going in. >> you just hope that it takes longer than it does. and he did outlive the average. the average after diagnosis is 7 to 10 years. he was just hitting the end of the 10th year. >> now, sylvia mackey's concern about her husband's condition is responsible for an ongoing study on the long-term effects of concussions on nfl players. >> john mackey was 69 years old.

funeral plans are still being finalized. wjz will have more on his passing coming up at 5:00 and 6:00. despite searching through the night, police have still not found that man armed with a gun and a hammer who attacked a speed camera on the beltway. >> reporter: police have now updated the description of the man they're looking for. they say he's more than 200 pounds. he's an older man in his 60s. but he has a pot belly, clear glasses, and had a backpack at the time. >> reporter: police are still searching this hour for the man who attacked a speed camera, mounted on this jeep, on the baltimore parkway, near the bwi marshall airport exit. they hunted from the air and deployed officers on the ground, after the unknown man confronted the speed camera of the suv. >> the man went to the rear window and began tapping on the rear window of the jeep with a shotgun. the witness was obviously

frightened at that point, began blowing his horn. he said the individual then came around the front of the truck and began striking the front word with his hammer. >> reporter: police say he was armed with the small hammer in one hand and a shotgun in the other and was yelling incoherently as he disappeared into the woods. >> the highway worker was not injured. the windshield on the jeep was broken, but at this point, we see nothing else damaged on the vehicle. >> reporter: the attack shut down roads and had businesses in the area on alert. >> stay in the rooms, lock the door, go in your car, lock the door. i was like, what is going on? is this like the muhammad scene? >> we saw a police car when we came out. we noticed one officer with a rifle pointed into the woods. >> reporter: police would not say if this was connected to a series of smoking packages sent to state office buildings in january. that person was never caught and was upset over electronic traffic stops. >> investigators say the man

was parked somewhere along concourse drive, where there are a number of hotels and businesses. reporting from anne arundel county, mike hellgren, wjz eyewitness news. >> and the state contractors were affiliated with the services for that. the search is over. the body of anne arundel county james cane was pulled from the river this morning. cane and a woman were tossed from a skiff. the search for a maryland man missing in the river is in its fifth day. the missing man is identified as patrick harmon. they are looking for his body. three others on the boat that capsized were rescued. dirt bike ambushes. city police have a new warning today for a new crime that is popping up in the city. jessica has more in the newsroom for us. >> reporter: it all starts with

an ad on craigslist to sell a dirt bike. this saturday city's impound lot, filled with illegal dirt bikes. recently, dirt bike sellers were robbed. the dirt bike sellers came from outside baltimore to meet with the potential buyers alone. in one case, that seller was beaten. city police urge anyone selling anything on craigslist, take someone with you, and try to get valid, legitimate information on the people you are meeting ahead of time. >> good advice, jessica. thank you. police have no somid -- solid descriptions of the suspects, only that they are likely under the age of 20. another live look outside. kind of day you expect to see scattered thunderstorms. wjz has weather and traffic together. meteorologist tim williams is here. >> hello, kai. and those scattered thunderstorms are definitely in place. we are looking at a lot of activity across the edge of the state. from far western maryland to

cecil county. 94 degrees, our temperature at bwi marshall. 37% relative humidity. we have 94 in the heart of the state. 84 down on the shore. we have 83 in oakland. as for what that feels when you start to add the dew point, up into the 60s it feels more like 96. we expect to see some of these thunderstorms continue to fire up through the afternoon. we'll continue to keep you posted for now. >> we'll check in on our roads right now. here's kristy breslin, at wjz traffic control. >> hi, mary. hi, everyone. >> we have problems out there, northbound 895. we have a live shot of that. let's go to the live picture right now. as you can see, we have the two right-hand lanes blocked there at child street. we're hoping they will open up in the next few minutes. but right now, the delay about 15 minutes long. back over to the beltway, at least 10 minutes from the inner loop there. north side outer loop slows down from dulaney valley to charles street. and the west side outer loop, heavy there to liberty road.

hammering out a deal on the debt limit. >> nothing is agreed to until everything is agreed to. and the parties are still far apart on a wide range of issues. >> reporter: thursday, both sides sat down together for the first time since republicans walked out of negotiations last month. the president called the meeting constructive. >> i thought that all of the leaders here came in a spirit of compromise and a spirit of wanting to solve problems on behalf of the american people. >> reporter: democrats and republicans are showing signs they're open to giving some ground on key issues that have preerchlted a deal -- prevented a deal so far. >> reporter: the white house says it's willing to discuss changes in social security and medicare spending. and republicans are leaning toward accepting changes in the tax code. >> well, everything is on the table, except raising taxes on the american people. >> reporter: but putting social security and medicare reform into the mix may not sit well with some in the president's own party. >> we are not going to balance the budget on the backs of

a hike ends in tragedy when a man is fatally mauled in the national park. the 57-year-old man and his wife were hiking wednesday when they surprised a female grizzly with her cubs. the attack marked the first mauling in quite a while. the mother grizzly was defending her cubs. an infamous impostor whose life was full of lies, is now headed to court in california. the new charges on so-called clark rockefeller. >> he's already served much of his sentencing for the kidnapping of his daughter. but the man who calls himself clark rockefeller is on the move, ready to face the murder charge now in california. >> he is very anxious to get out there and defend himself. this, as far as he's concerned, is the beginning of the rest of his life. >> reporter: he's the man who duped people close to coast, using various aliases. when he lived in california 2

1/2 years ago, he was christopher chichester, who lived with a couple who suddenly vanished. and now, prosecutors are convinced they have the killer. >> he is unequivocal in profezzing -- professorring -- professing his innocence and that has not changed from the firsttime i met with him when the charges were announced. . >> the international manhunt ended for rockefeller when he was arrested in baltimore in 2008. the rally on wall street continued today. stocks announced their highest level in nearly two months. the dow was up 93. s&p up 14. nasdaq up 49. let's go to new york, where alison harmelin has more. >> reporter: the job market is showing signs of improvement. the number of americans who filed for first-time unemployment benefits is at a two-month low.

and processor adp says companies added more than double what economists predicted. americans are going shopping and giving stores the biggest one-month sales boost in more than 10 years. deep discounts help many retailers report better than expected sales in june, including target, costco and kohl's. economists say recent improvements could be wiped out if the government does not raise the debt ceiling. republicans and democrats met with president obama today, but no deal was made. and negotiations continued. if the debt ceiling is not raised by august 2nd, america could default on its bills. and the president says that could trigger another recession. one of the world's most- read newspapers is shutting down. the british tabloid, "news of the world" is accused of hacking into the cell phones of celebrities, politicians, and even missing children.

well, taking a look at a pretty warm and a little hazy afternoon. humidity levels and dew points are pretty high today. and the temperature, of course, high with it. adding a bit of an uncomfortable feel to the forecast. but we expect this for the first full week of july. right now, we have temperatures in the mid-90s. with relative humidity at 37. but the dew point is in the mid- 60s. that's going to add to that muggy feel. it is very july-like. feels like 96 when you factor in the warmer winds from the south at 14 miles per hour. and that high dew point. across the state, we have 83 in oakland. 90 in cumberland. 91 in elkton. and 84 down in ocean city. patuxent river in the mid-80s as well. we have mid-90s straight across the central portions of the state.

and 86 down on kent island. we have been seeing the winds picking up just a little bit. very light winds and almost a calm reading around noon or so. and then we start to see them pick up as whiffles of low pressure have been riding along that front. that is draped just across the state at this hour. we see double digits coming in. and we're tapping in that warmer air. look at these temperatures down near dallas. 100 degrees, 94 down on the bayou. and 91 in atlanta. that's what we are starting to feel. what we have is a front that has been stationary that is just below the station. it's draped right across the mason-dixon line almost. and going from the ocean into the ohio river valley. they do have another front approaching from the west/northwest. that is going to be here tomorrow. the combination of those two fronts and the strengths of all of that lifts that they are going to start to pull in, that warmer air, riding in over some of the cooler air, in the

higher elevations. that's going to present a problem for us. and by the way, thunderstorms. some of them could be very strong at times. the winds will gust. as much -- some of those storms could present 1 to 2 inches of rain. high pressure is in control, heading into the weekend. temperatures stay moderately into the upper 80s, low 90s. but it's going to be a comfortable weekend with a lot of sunshine. sunset today, 8:35. no advisories on the bay. tonight, going down to just around 71 degrees. mainly cloudy and a thunderstorm in spots. tonight, we'll see temperatures around 71. up to about 81 tomorrow. thundershowers again. thunderstorms could be strong again. it's going to be a muggy day. although temperatures won't be quite as high. again, we'll keep you posted. mary and kai, back to you. don't miss tonight's cbs primetime lineup. it's the premiere of big brother 13 at 8:00. then at 10:00, it's another episode of the mentalist. then stay tuned for eyewitness news at 11:00. the o's road trip continues

it is 4:30, 91 degrees and partly cloudy. i'm vic carter. >> and i'm denise koch. here's what people are talking about. >> it is the end of an era, but the weather could get in the way. joel brown reports from the kennedy space center. final preparations are under way for the last space shuttle launch. >> reporter: the weather is not looking good for friday's final space shuttle launch. >> clouds are rolling in. we are expecting more of this over the next couple of days. >> reporter: lightning hit near the launch pad earlier thursday, causing concern about the shuttle's electrical systems. but nasa is not ready to scrub just yet. all pre-flight preparations are going forward. >> i am expecting that we'll go ahead and do this. >> while nasa is determined to stay focused on its mission, workers admit this is an emotional time. >> it's not a piece of metal. it's a way of life. it's what what we do.

>> reporter: nasa is expecting up to a million people to show up for the final launch. and many of them are disappointed that the billion- dollar program is ending. >> i really didn't think about it until we found out this is actually going to be the last launch. then we were really excited about wanting to come down here. >> reporter: the 30-year shuttle program has had success and tragedy. discovery delivered the hubble telescope to space. and 30 shuttle missions helped build and supply the space stations. but two were lost. challenger in 1986, and columbia, in 2003. after atlantis touches down for the last time, the russians will be the ones to carry astronauts to and from the space station. and nasa promises to work on other spacecrafts to take americans even deeper into space. joel brown, cbs news. >> nasa says it has until sunday or possibly monday to wait for better weather. otherwise, they'll have to wait

until next weekend to launch. a bizarre murder plot is uncovered in north dakota. but not before an elderly woman is murdered in her home. >> reporter: investigators say a murder over the weekend was intended to be the first of a bloody crime spree, ending at the white house. police say an escaped convict broke into an elderly woman's home and murdered her as she slept in her bed. investigators say that first murder was the beginning of a plan. the man allegedly began killing people. until he drove to washington d.c. once there, he said he planned to kill president obama. >> the man apparently walked away from a halfway house last week. he is now charged with premeditated murder. an attempted case of suicide by cop in washington, d.c. lands a maryland man in prison. john wheeler, jr., was sentenced to more than a year behind bars. last september, officers shot

wheeler after they say he approached them, carrying a gun. nobody was hurt. relatives say the man was depressed and trying to get police to kill him. rupert murdoch has decided to shut down his troubled uk to tabloid. it comes after the tabloid was linked to a phone scandal. >> reporter: news of the world will print its last edition is this sunday. fallout from the phone hacking scandal is shutting down rupert murdoch's 168-year-old paper. reporters are accused of breaking into the voice mail of murder victims, the families of dead soldiers, and celebrities. murdoch's son james made the announcement to the staff, saying the news of the world is in the business of holding others to account, but it failed when it came to itself. there has been outrage across the country. even the british parliament held an emergency session, expressing its disgust. >> reporter: the scandal has been growing wider by the day.

london's police force is under investigation, for allegedly taking bribes. >> reporter: the latest from the hacking appear to be former boyfriends for princess diana. lawyers believe news of the world hacked the men's phones. big groups like the veterans groups had already cut ties with the they paper. >> anyone who was aware of it and knew it was going on, should face criminal charges. >> until this matter is resolved, you cannot see this pushing ahead. >> reporter: news of the world now say its is cooperating with police, and the staffers who acted wrongly will face the consequences. rita nissan, wjz eyewitness news. >> news of the world says it will not run any advertising on its final weekend, and it will give the paper's revenue to charitable causes. a solemn day in philadelphia. it has been exactly one year since a fatal duck boat accident. it tied up today, in memory of

the crash that killed two young tourists. last year, a barge crashed into it. investigators later learned the tugboat pilot had been on his cell phone at the time of the crash. a local beach is reviewing safety procedures after a young child drowns over the independence day weekend. marymary bubala has more on -- mary bubala has more. >> it happened on the 4th of july before lifeguards came on duty. police say a handful of children were playing with a ball in the surf when a 6-year- old went under the water and didn't resurface. park rangers and volunteers were able to pull the boy from the water, but he was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital. officials are now reviewing all beach safety policies and they're encouraging all parents to keep a very close eye on their children, of course. >> thank you, mary. although it is not illegal, park rangers say they do not recommend swimming without a lifeguard on duty. one of the owners of the

most beloved restaurants has died. rialos has been a staple in fells point since 1991. and it is still known for its famous breakfast menu. vincent ralo was 79. british researchers say that reducing your salt intake has almost no impact on reducing the likelihood of heart disease. the controversial findings have not won over many doctors. a british doctor says there is overwhelming evidence that salt raises blood pressure. there is a chance for pop- up storms. outside, it's warm, sunny. but there are thunderstorms heading our way. wjz has weather and traffic together. bob is here with a look at first warning live doppler radar. take a look at radar. all across the maryland- pennsylvania border. that's where we're seeing a whole bunch of shower and

thunderstorm act first. just around bel air over to medina, north of hereford park. all across northern park. and a heavier band here you can see around glen rock, maryland line, shrewsbury. that's all moving across extreme northern baltimore county. another storm just to the east of cumberland. so we have storm activity in the region. it looks like the balance there will be just around the maryland-pennsylvania border, south of washington. don't expect to see a whole lot. but tomorrow, the same front is going to sink a little further south. and we have chances for heavy, heavy rain and thunderstorm activity again tomorrow. there's a little more widespread than today, looks like. >> okay, bob. thank you. let's check in on the roads now with kristy breslin at wjz traffic control. the harrisburg expressway, still quite a scene there. heavy congestion in the northbound direction, from shawan to belfast. it will take you at least 20

cable cars more than 400 feet in the air, stalled. more than 400 people were rescued from stalled cable waves. it reaches 1,000 feet across the scenic area of mount bayou in north carolina. the cable waves have since resumed normal operation. the accused underwear bomber is in court today. he is charged with attempting to blow up an airplane, with a bomb concealed in his underwear on a flight, christmas of 2009. he said he researched the bomb but failed to get training from al qaeda in yemen. a man known as a marine was found to be the sole person responsible for a crash.

>> the training exercise, the helicopter crashed, sending five people to the hospital. 25-year-old trevor cook died on impact. he was a crew chief. he enlisted back in september 2004 and was recently married. it is the first operational crash in this type of aircraft. investigators say it is not clear if weather played a role in this accident. vic, back to you. >> the injured marines are not being identified. but they are expected to survive. a shooting at a funeral. six adults and one child were wounded while mourning the loss of a loved one in las vegas. the funeral was for an degrees armando elena, who was stabbed to death in late june on the las vegas strip. police are still looking for the shooter. the victims are in medical care for minor injuries. we'll add this one to the shame on you file. a group of teenagers, reportedly robbing a lemonade stand. the young business owners say the teen threatened to beat them up if they didn't hand

over the cash. >> reporter: it's a favorite summer pastime for little kids. but this lemonade stand was squeezed by thieves in strongsville saturday. >> the teenager's car pulls up. so it looks like they're getting money -- getting ready to get out so they can get some. so we pour some. and they come out of the car and threaten to beat us up if we don't give them money. >> when i said the words, i got scared and i ran and hid behind the tree. >> we gave them the money. and then we sat back because we got a little scared. then, when they said they were dragging away, i chased after them. >> reporter: the thieves got away with the kids' goody char. -- jar. and the goodies inside. >> at least $13.50. >> i was kind of scared this would happen this would happen to, particularly us, there's a whole group. a lot people involved in this. >> for a lemonade, stand, that

wildfire came dangerously close. planes with radiation monitors were sent over. the giant dust storm that blanketed phoenix, arizona, is the latest phenomenon in the latest string of events. 2011 has been a year of violent weather. >> this is a legitimate haboob or dust storm. >> reporter: the giant wall of dust that swept into phoenix was bigger than most. a mile high and packing almost 60-mile-per-hour winds. >> we thought it was a cloud. then we got into it and it was just black. >> reporter: the dust began to gather near tucson, where it hasn't raged in two months. by the time it hit phoenix, it dwarfed the city. larger than anything seen in 100 years. the dust storm is the latest freak phenomenon in a string of weather events. in the western mountains, there was so much moisture this winter, the snow is still there. a lingering snow pack that hasn't been seen for 15 years.

looks like some rain is falling, bob. >> we had some thunderstorms. in fact, you folks out in central and southern allegheny county. pretty strong storm, but it's moving generally into west virginia and away from the region. take a look at the activity. just moves through cumberland. but another one in there, moving toward west virginia. close to the baltimore area. we have some thunderstorm activity, across portions of the harford county. pretty heavy down toward 95 there. another one over hereford, jacksonville maryland line. you can see, we have pretty gt good activity around the region. most of the activity is north of the baltimore metro area. probably not a whole lot. most of the activity is right along the maryland pennsylvania border. as you can see with that stalled-out front. but tomorrow, that front should be a little for the south. and we expect to see these tomorrow. and could be heavy downpours tomorrow, in the region.

94 degrees at the airport. with a lot more sun down there, where it's been raining, temperatures have dropped quickly into the 70s, of course. the dew point did drop and get to 64. humidity, 37. winds higher earlier. barometer, 29.88 inches and falling. 88 in cumberland. 81, oakland. 94, washington. 84, ocean city. and 93 in easton. with a relative humidity in the 30 to 40% range. it's making temperatures feel 3 or 4 degrees warmer than the actual degrees. so even though it's 94, it really feels more like 96. only 86, the temperature closer to the water. but we have thunderstorms north of the city, as you saw. particularly in baltimore and harford county. and we'll continue to give those folks rain. south winds, as you can see, pretty good breeze now. pushed the activity sort of away from the baltimore region. there's another batch of activity that will be developing tomorrow.

along a frontal boundary crossing portions of ohio, pennsylvania, north of our region. actually, from about boston. can't really see it too well. but you see those clouds there, tomorrow, that line is expected to be a little further to the south. a little wave of low pressure coming in from the midwest, will help to induce more showers and storms. could see 1 to 2 inches of rain in some of those local downpours tomorrow. by saturday, the fronts through the region, tryer air. a lot of sunshine. looks like a pretty nice weekend shaping up. a little hot. temperatures probably 80 to 90 degrees. southeast winds on the bay. bay temperatures, about 83 degrees. scattered storms tonight. 71 tonight. and kind of humid and warm. tomorrow, same thing as today. but not as hot. 85. a lot more clouds. could see a couple of really downpours tomorrow afternoon. could each see flooding rains. we have a flash flood watch going into effect later tomorrow afternoon, into tomorrow night, for much of central and northern maryland.
